This pattern is called the hero's journey. Some people also call it the monomyth.

Joseph Campbell was a famous scholar who studied these stories. He wrote a book in 1949. He said the journey has 17 stages. These stages can be split into three main parts.

First is the departure. The hero leaves their normal life. They get a call to go on an adventure. Sometimes they feel afraid to go. A mentor or helper may arrive to help them. This helper might give them magic tools.

Second is the initiation. The hero enters a new and strange world. They must face many tests and trials. They often reach a central crisis. They must win a big fight to get a reward.

Third is the return. The hero goes back to their home. They bring back a prize or a treasure. This prize can help other people. The hero is changed by the trip. They gain new wisdom or power.
