He spent his life studying myths. Myths are old stories about gods and heroes. He also studied different religions. Campbell taught at Sarah Lawrence College for many years. He was a very fast runner in his youth. He also loved to read. During the Great Depression, he lived in a small shack. He spent five years reading for nine hours every day. This helped him learn a lot. He wrote a big book called The Hero with a Thousand Faces. In this book, he shared his idea of the monomyth. A monomyth is one big story pattern. He believed most hero stories follow this same pattern. His ideas helped many artists. Even George Lucas used his work for Star Wars. Campbell often said, "Follow your bliss." This means you should do what brings you joy. He died in Hawaii in 1987. His work still helps people understand old stories today.
