These tales focus on martial artists. The word wuxia has two parts. Wu means martial or armed. Xia means a hero or a person who is chivalrous. These heroes often come from low social classes. They do not work for kings or lords. Instead, they live in a world called the jianghu. This means "rivers and lakes." It is a special place for people on the edges of society.

Wuxia heroes follow a strict code. They fight to right wrongs and help the weak. They try to stop people who are mean or unfair. Many stories are set in ancient China. Some stories even include magic or supernatural powers. A hero might face a great loss. Then, they must train hard to become a great fighter.
