Web 2.0 is a term for a new way the internet works. It describes websites that focus on user-generated content. This means the people using the site create the material.

Instead of just reading, people can participate in a virtual community. These sites are easy to use and work well with many devices. This style of the web is also called the social web. It makes the internet a place for talking and sharing ideas.

In the old days, we used Web 1.0. Most people were just consumers of content. This means they only looked at what was already there.

Web 1.0 sites were often static. Static means the pages did not change much. Users could not easily add their own ideas to a page. Some sites had guestbooks for comments, but that was rare. Now, Web 2.0 sites are dynamic. They change based on what people add every day.

The name Web 2.0 has an interesting history. Darcy DiNucci first used the term in 1999. She was looking at how the web would change. Later, Tim O'Reilly and Dale Dougherty made the term famous. They spoke about it at a big conference in 2004.

They described the web as a platform for everyone. This means software can run right in your browser. This shift helped move things away from old desktop software.

There are many specific tools that make Web 2.0 work. Social media sites like Facebook allow people to connect. Video sharing sites like YouTube let anyone upload movies. You can also use wikis to write together.

Some people use tagging to label their photos or links. This is also called a folksonomy. You might use a "like" button to show you enjoy something. These features help people build value for the whole community.

Think about how you use the internet today. You might write a blog on WordPress or Tumblr. You might leave a comment on a news story. This is much different than just reading a digital book. Even Wikipedia works this way by using many editors.
