An American comic book is a thin, stapled book filled with stories.

Most of these books have between 24 and 64 pages. Some people even call them "floppy" comics because they are not stiff like regular books. Many people love to collect them as a hobby. Some rare comic books have sold for more than 1 million dollars! To keep them safe, fans use plastic sleeves called "bags" and cardboard "boards." These help protect the pages from getting damaged. Comic books are one of the three biggest comic industries in the world, along with Japanese manga and Franco-Belgian comics.

Creating a comic book is often a big team effort.

First, a writer creates a story idea and a script. Next, a penciller draws the artwork using pencils. An inker then goes over those drawings with ink to finish them. A colorist adds the colors using a special printing process. Finally, a letterer adds the speech balloons and captions so readers can follow the dialogue. This whole process must be finished before the book is sent to a printer. Once it is printed, it is very hard to make changes.

Long ago, people collected comic strips in thick, hardcover books.

In 1897, a book called "The Yellow Kid in McFadden's Flats" was published. It was a 196-page book that cost 50 cents. Later, in 1922, a monthly book called "Comic Monthly" appeared. In 1929, Dell Publishing released "The Funnies," which was a 16-page book with four colors. By 1933, a group called Eastern Color Printing made "Funnies on Parade." They printed 10,000 copies to give away as prizes for people who sent in soap coupons. These early steps helped lead to the modern comic books we know today.

Many historians believe "Famous Funnies: A Carnival of Comics" was the first true American comic book.

It was published in 1933 and helped start a huge new way to publish magazines. In 1934, the book "Famous Funnies #1" became a big hit. It had 68 pages and sold 90 percent of its 200,000 copies. Even though the company lost money at first, they soon made a $30,000 profit on each issue. In 1935, a new publisher released "New Fun #1." This book included many different types of stories, like funny animals and Western adventures.

In 1938, a very famous hero named Superman appeared in "Action Comics #1."

He wore a cape and colorful tights that looked like circus performers. Superman became the model for almost all superheroes that followed. This started a "superhero boom" that lasted until the end of World War II. After the war, other types of stories became popular, like horror and science fiction. In the 1960s, superheroes became popular again. Today, superheroes are still the most famous characters in the comic book world.
