It is best known for introducing Superman. He is one of the first major superhero characters ever made. This magazine helped start the Golden Age of Comic Books. The series has been around for a very long time. It ran from 1938 until 2011. Later, a second volume began in 2011. It eventually returned to its original numbering in 2016. This long history shows how much people love these stories.

Creating Superman was a big job for two men. Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were the creators. At first, they imagined Superman as a bad man. He was a bald man with mind powers. He used these powers to cause trouble for people. Siegel wondered what would happen if Superman was good instead. They changed him into a hero who helps others. They turned his ideas into newspaper strips first. Then, they put them into a comic book format. This new way of telling stories worked very well.

In the beginning, the magazine had many different stories. It was an anthology, which means it held many tales. You could read about a magician named Zatara. There was also a hero named Tex Thompson. Sometimes, the stories were even funny. One character was a policeman named Hayfoot Henry. He was special because he spoke in rhyme. Other characters like Vigilante also had long runs. The magazine was a place for many different kinds of adventures.

Many famous characters first appeared in these pages. Lois Lane met Superman in the very first issue. She thought Clark Kent was a coward at first. Jimmy Olsen also appeared early on. He started as an inquisitive office boy. Later, new powers were added to the stories. Superman got X-ray vision and super-hearing in 1939. He also got super-breath in 1940. The famous villain Lex Luthor arrived in 1940 too. These characters became part of a huge world.

As years passed, the stories grew even bigger. In 1958, Superman got his Fortress of Solitude. This is a special secret home for him. The stories also introduced Supergirl in 1959. She is Superman's cousin, Kara Zor-El. Other characters like Brainiac and the Bizarro World appeared. The magazine changed many times over the decades. It moved through the Silver, Bronze, and Modern Ages.
