People love these stories because they show a powerful hero facing many adventures.

Kara's life has many different steps depending on the story. In one version, she lives as a teenager named Linda Danvers. She lives in a place called Midvale with her foster parents, the Danvers. To keep her identity a secret, she wears a brunette wig. This hides her natural blonde hair from her friends. She even goes to high school and later attends college in Chicago. She has held many jobs, like being a news reporter or an actress.

She often chooses her hero work over her personal life.

Supergirl first appeared in a comic called Action Comics #252 in May 1959. Otto Binder wrote the story, and Al Plastino drew the pictures. Before this, there were other characters who used similar names. For example, Lois Lane once became Superwoman in a dream. Another character named Queen Lucy was called Supergirl during a contest. In 1958, a different character appeared in Superman #123. That character was created by Jimmy Olsen using a magic totem. These early stories helped creators see that fans liked female heroes.

There are many important facts about Kara's history in space. She is often the survivor of Argo City. This city stayed safe under a large plastic dome. The dome was made by her father, Zor-El, to help with the weather. When a meteor hit the city, Kara had to come to Earth. In some stories, she is a teenager when her cousin is just a baby. She traveled in a rocket ship while in a deep sleep. This is why she is younger than Superman even though she was born first.

Supergirl is more than just a character in a book. She has become part of many different kinds of media. You can see her in animated shows and movies. She also appears on television and in many toys. In 2011, a list called the Top 100 Comic Book Heroes named her 94th. Later, in 2013, she was ranked 17th among DC Comics heroes. This shows how much people value her character. She remains a very important part of the world of heroes.
