A graphic novel is a book that uses both drawings and words to tell a story. This book is special because it tells a true story about history and family. It is a mix of many things like a memoir, a biography, and a history book. In 1992, it made history by becoming the first graphic novel to win a Pulitzer Prize.

This prize is a very big honor for writers and artists.

The story works by moving between two different times. In the first part, we see the present day in New York City. It is the years 1978 and 1979. Art Spiegelman sits with his father, Vladek, to ask him questions.

Art uses a tape recorder to capture everything his father says. The second part of the story moves back to the past. It starts in the mid-1930s and goes until the end of the war in 1945. This part shows Vladek's life during the Holocaust.

Art Spiegelman used a unique way to draw the characters. He chose to draw different groups of people as different animals. In this book, Jewish people are drawn as mice. German people are drawn as cats.

Poles are drawn as pigs. This style helps show the roles people played during the war. It is a very famous way to tell a difficult story. Art used a simple drawing style to tell this big tale.

To make the book, Art did a lot of hard work. He first made a small three-page comic called "Maus" in 1972. This gave him the chance to interview his father about his life. He then spent many years doing more research. Art read many accounts from people who survived the war.

He also looked at old Polish pamphlets about different regions. He wanted to make sure the facts were as true as possible. He even visited the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1979.

This book connects to many things we study in school. It helps us understand what happened during World War II. It also shows how families can have hard relationships. Art and his father had a very strained relationship.
