Marjane's story begins when she is a ten-year-old girl in Iran. She lives through the Islamic Revolution and the Iran-Iraq war. During this time, her society undergoes many big changes. New rules require women to cover themselves in public. Social freedoms are also restricted by the government. Marjane's family belongs to the upper-middle class. They use books and the radio to learn about the world. This helps Marjane understand politics at a very young age.

Marjane's life changes many times as she grows up. Her uncle, Anoosh, tells her stories about being a revolutionary. His stories make her value ideas like equality and resistance. Later, the war makes life very difficult in her hometown of Tehran. Marjane's family must hide in a basement to stay safe from missiles. Eventually, her parents decide to send her to Austria. They want her to be safe and able to study. This move is very hard for her family, especially her mother.

In Austria, Marjane starts a new life as a student. She goes to the Lycée Français de Vienne, which is a French school. At first, she finds it hard because she cannot speak German. She eventually learns the language and makes new friends. However, she also feels a sense of culture shock. She experiences many different ways of living that are different from Iran. After four years in Vienna, Marjane decides to return to her home in Tehran.

Returning to Iran brings new challenges for Marjane. She sees many large murals of martyrs in the streets. She also faces many rules from the religious police. Marjane gets married to a man named Reza in 1991. However, she soon realizes that she feels trapped in her role as a wife. She chooses to get a divorce in 1994. Finally, Marjane leaves Iran to live in Paris. Her story shows that freedom can have a high price.
