Code Geass is a famous Japanese anime television series.

It is a story about a prince named Lelouch Lamperouge. He lives in a world split into three large superpowers. One of these is the Holy Britannian Empire. This empire took over Japan on August 10, 2010. The empire renamed the country Area 11.

People in Japan were called Elevens after this change. The show is loved for its great story and characters. Many people call it one of the best anime series ever made.

The story follows Lelouch as he leads a rebellion. He meets a mysterious woman named C.C. She gives him a supernatural power called Geass. This power is known as the power of absolute obedience. Lelouch can command anyone to do what he wants. He can only use this power through direct eye contact. The power can only affect a person one time.

Lelouch uses this gift to fight the Britannian Empire. He wants to create a better world for his sister, Nunnally. He also wears a mask and leads a group called the Black Knights. He uses the name Zero to hide his true identity.

The creators at Sunrise studio first thought of this idea. Ichirō Ōkouchi and Gorō Taniguchi developed the concept together. They worked with a producer named Yoshitaka Kawaguchi. The group Clamp designed the characters for the series. This was the first time Clamp was asked to design characters for an anime.

They wanted to make a hit show that everyone could enjoy. The character designs were later turned into animation by Takahiro Kimura. He worked hard to keep the art style of Clamp. The music was composed by Kōtarō Nakagawa and Hitomi Kuroishi.

Code Geass first aired in Japan on October 5, 2006. It was shown on the MBS television station. The first season finished in July 2007. A sequel called Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 aired in 2008.

The series has been very successful in Japan. It sold over one million DVD and Blu-ray discs. It also won many awards at the Tokyo International Anime Fair. Other awards include the Animage Anime Grand Prix and Animation Kobe. Bandai Entertainment brought the series to English speakers in 2007.

The world of the show feels like other famous stories. The three superpowers are similar to the world in George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. The idea of Geass might come from old Irish and Welsh legends. In those legends, a geas is a command given to someone. This command can be good or bad for the person. The series uses many different parts like manga and light novels. A new film called Lelouch of the Re;surrection came out in 2019. More sequels are also being made for fans to enjoy.
