He is an Afghan-American author who first worked as a doctor. The book tells a deep story about two boys in Kabul, Afghanistan. It looks at how people deal with guilt and how they try to make things right. This idea is called redemption. The story is also about the strong bonds between fathers and their children.

Many readers find the book moving because it explores these human feelings.

The story begins with Amir and his friend Hassan in a peaceful Kabul. They spend their days participating in kite fighting. Hassan is a very skilled "kite runner," which means he catches the kites that are cut loose.

However, a sad event happens when Amir is too scared to help Hassan during an attack by a boy named Assef. This moment of cowardice stays with Amir for a long time. Later, the story moves to America after the Soviet Union enters Afghanistan. Amir grows up and becomes a successful writer in California. He eventually learns he must return to his roots to help Hassan's son, Sohrab.

Khaled Hosseini began writing this story after seeing a news report. In 1999, he learned that the Taliban had banned kite flying in Afghanistan. This news felt very personal to him because he grew up with the sport. He started with a short 25-page story about two boys.

He later found the manuscript in his garage in March 2001. With help from his editor, Cindy Spiegel, he turned the short story into a full novel. He even used drawings and doodles to help him figure out the plot.

The book was a massive success when it was published in 2003. It stayed on the New York Times best-seller list for more than two years. In the United States alone, over seven million copies were sold.

Because so many people loved it, the story was adapted into other forms. There was a movie released in 2007, several stage plays, and even a graphic novel. The author also recorded an audiobook version for people to listen to.

This novel connects to many other famous stories about family and bravery. Some people compare the themes of betrayal and fatherly love to the works of William Shakespeare. It shows how a single choice can change a person's entire life. The book also helps readers understand the history of Afghanistan. It covers big changes like the fall of the monarchy and the rise of the Taliban.
