Kim is a famous adventure book written by Rudyard Kipling. It tells a grand story set in India during the late 1800s. The book is a picaresque novel, which means it follows the adventures of a clever hero. Many people believe this is Kipling's greatest work. It is loved for how it shows the many different people and religions in India. The story brings the busy bazaars and the wide roads to life.

The story follows a boy named Kimball "Kim" O'Hara. Kim is an orphan whose father was an Irish soldier. He lives a wandering life on the streets of Lahore. Kim is so tanned that people do not know he is white. He meets a Tibetan lama who is on a spiritual journey. Kim becomes the lama's chela, which is a word for a student or disciple. Together, they travel along the Grand Trunk Road to find a legendary river.

As Kim grows up, he learns how to be a spy. He works for the British Secret Service to help with the Great Game. The Great Game was a political struggle between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. Kim learns to use disguises and study how people act. He even practices a memory game with jewels. This is called Kim's Game, or the Jewel Game. It is a way to practice noticing small details.

Kipling first shared this story in magazines between 1900 and 1901. It appeared in McClure's Magazine and Cassell's Magazine. Later, Macmillan & Co. Ltd published it as a book in October 1901. The story is set between the Second Anglo-Afghan War and the Third. This was a time when the world was changing very fast. The book was even ranked as one of the 100 best English novels of the 20th century.

Many people have used this book to make new things. There was a movie made by MGM in 1950 starring Errol Flynn. Other people have made television shows and even a computer game. The story has inspired many other writers to create their own tales. Some writers even wrote books that take place in the same world. Even a town in Colorado was named Kim to honor this book.
