These films are often written in the Persian language. Many people call them art films because they are so special. Some critics even say Iran has one of the most important cinemas in the world. They compare these movies to famous art movements from other countries. For the last twenty years, many big film festivals have given awards to Iranian movies. People all over the world watch them to see new ideas and beautiful stories.

Long before cameras existed, people in Iran were already telling stories through art.

Around 500 BC, artists made bas-reliefs at a place called Persepolis. A bas-relief is a type of sculpture made by carving into stone. Later, during the Sassanian period, artists made very detailed carvings in Taq Bostan. One carving even shows a wounded pig, which looks like a close-up shot in a movie! Artists also made Persian miniatures, which are tiny, colorful paintings. These paintings did not use perspective, so artists could show many different stories in one single picture.

Movies first arrived in Iran at the start of the 20th century.

The very first filmmaker was Mirza Ebrahim Khan Akkas Bashi. He was a photographer for the King of Persia. In 1900, he used a camera to film the King visiting Europe. Later, the first public movie screening happened in Tehran in 1904. It was held in the back of an antique shop! By 1905, the first real movie theater opened on Cheragh Gaz Avenue. It took some time to grow, but more theaters opened in 1912 thanks to Ardeshir Khan.

As time went on, filmmakers began to use sound and new schools.

In 1925, Ovanes Ohanian started the first film school in Iran. In 1930, he made the first silent film called Abi and Rabi. A few years later, Abdolhossein Sepanta made the first sound film in 1933. It was called Lor Girl and played in two Tehran cinemas. Sepanta also made movies about famous poets and love stories. Later, leaders like Esmail Koushan helped the industry grow by starting a film society in 1949.

Today, Iranian movies are known for their unique styles and deep themes.

Many films tell true stories about children or real-life problems. Famous directors like Abbas Kiarostami won the big Palme d'Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 1997. Actors like Shahab Hosseini and Zar Amir Ebrahimi have also won top awards. Even actresses like Shohreh Aghdashloo have been nominated for Oscars. From the mountains of Kurdistan to the streets of Tehran, cinema helps the world see the heart of Iran.
