For a long time, people called the film industry Yeşilçam. This name means "Green Pine" in Turkish. It comes from a street in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul. This street was the home for many actors and film studios. Today, Turkish films are huge hits that often beat foreign movies at the box office.

Making films in Turkey has changed many times over the years. At first, most movies came from other countries like the United States or France. Local companies like İpek Film and Kemal Film helped change this. They used their own theaters to show movies to more people.

In the 1930s, they even built a studio for dubbing. This helped them turn silent films into movies with sound. Later, a system of seven regional areas helped spread films everywhere. These areas included big cities like Istanbul, İzmir, and Ankara.

The history of Turkish film began very long ago. The first film shown in the Ottoman Empire was in 1896. It was a film by the Lumière Brothers shown in Constantinople.

There was a very busy time called the Yeşilçam era. This happened mostly between 1955 and 1975. During this time, Turkey was a top film producer in the world.

In the 1960s, Turkey was the fourth biggest producer of movies. By the early 1970s, they were making 300 films every year. This era was famous for its iconic songs. Many people still love these soundtrack songs today. Famous actors like Türkan Şoray and Kemal Sunal became stars during this time.

Turkish cinema is linked to older ways of telling stories. Long ago, people used performers called Meddah to tell tales. They also used shadow plays like Karagöz and Hacivat.
