Arab cinema is the wide world of movies made across the Arab world.

While many countries make films, Egypt is a major leader in this art. Cairo has been the main center for the film industry for a long time.

Egypt even became a leader in animation with the Frenkel brothers. They made the first animated film in 1936 called Mafish Fayda. Today, filmmakers use new tools to make 3D horror movies. This shows how the way movies are made is always changing.

The history of these films began in the very early 1900s. The first movie screening in Egypt happened in Alexandria in 1896.

At first, many movies were silent and looked like Western films. By the 1920s, countries began making their own full-length movies. The film Laila was released in Egypt in 1927. In 1932, the film Awlad El-Zawat became the first one with Arabic speech. Later, the years from the late 1940s to the 1960s were called the "golden age." During this time, many famous stars became huge names in Cairo.

Famous actors like Hind Rostom and Anwar Wagdi were part of the golden age. In 1952, Egypt's film industry was the third largest in the whole world. Egypt also started the first annual film festival in the Arab world in 1952. Later, the Cairo International Film Festival began in 1976.

In the Gulf, the film Bas ya Bahar was a big deal in 1972. Even more recently, the first Saudi cinema opened in Jeddah in 2018.
