This is because Cairo produces about three-quarters of all films in the Arab world. Since 1896, Egypt has made over 4,000 different films. These movies help share Egyptian culture with many other people. They also help spread the Egyptian Arabic dialect across many lands.

Musical films also became a major part of cinema. Many people bought tickets just to hear their favorite singers. In the 1930s and 1940s, about half of all films were musicals.

The history of Egyptian film began in the late 1800s. The first film projections happened in Alexandria in 1896.

Soon after, the first Egyptian cinema opened its doors in 1897. In 1917, a director named Mohammed Karim started a production company. By 1925, a large company called the Egyptian Acting and Cinema Company was formed. By 1926, there were already 86 cinemas working in Egypt. These early steps helped build a very strong foundation for the future.

Egypt experienced a "Golden Age" from the 1940s to the 1960s. During the 1950s, Egypt was the third largest film maker in the world.
