It is a huge school with many different parts. Today, it has about 155,000 students studying in 20 different faculties. This makes it one of the 50 largest universities in the whole world. It is known as a top school in Africa too. Many people who graduate from here go on to do great things. In fact, three of its graduates have even won Nobel Prizes.

The university works by bringing many smaller schools together.

Before the university started, there were already professional schools in Egypt. Some of these were very old. For example, the School of Engineering began in 1816. The School of Medicine started in 1827. Other schools like the School of Pharmacy and the School of Agriculture joined later. Now, these schools are called faculties within the university. They allow students to study many different subjects in one place.

The history of the school began a long time ago.

It was founded on 21 December 1908. At first, it was a private school called the Egyptian University. It did not have one main campus back then. Instead, teachers held classes in different palaces and halls. Many people worked hard to make it happen. Wealthy citizens and even Princess Fatma Ismail gave money or land to help.

As time passed, the university changed many times.

In 1925, it became a state institution under King Fuad I. In 1940, they renamed it King Fuad I University to honor him. After the Egyptian revolution in 1952, it changed names again. By 1954, it finally became known as Cairo University. In 1929, the school moved to its main campus in Giza. This campus sits right across the Nile from the city of Cairo.

Learning at the university has changed for many people over the years.

For a long time, there were not many Egyptian professors with doctoral degrees. Because of this, teachers from other countries often gave the lectures. In 1928, the first group of female students was allowed to enroll. The university has also grown to include many modern programs. For instance, the Faculty of Engineering now teaches things like computer engineering. It remains a central part of life and education in Egypt.
