Learning at Al-Azhar has changed many times over many centuries. In the beginning, students focused on the Qur'an and Islamic law. They also studied logic, grammar, and how to calculate moon phases. Later, the school began to use a college system. This meant the school had separate buildings for classrooms and dorms. In 1961, the university added many new subjects. Students can now study things like science, medicine, and engineering.

History shows that many different leaders helped shape this institution. It was founded around the year 970 by the Fatimid Caliphate. The name comes from Fatimah, who was the daughter of Muhammad. A commander named Jawhar al-Siqilli started building it as a mosque. Later, a leader named Saladin changed the school to follow Sunni Islam. During his time, many books from the old palace were lost or burned.
