The Little Prince is a famous story that explores deep ideas about life.

It is a novella written and illustrated by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. He was a French writer and a pilot. The book looks at themes like loneliness, friendship, love, and loss. Even though it is often read as a children's book, it makes observations about adults and human nature. It has become one of the most successful works in history.

This book has sold an estimated 140 million copies around the world. By November 2024, it had been translated into 600 different languages and dialects. This makes it the second most translated work ever published, following only the Bible.

The story begins with a pilot who crashes his plane in the Sahara desert.

While trying to fix his aircraft, he meets a young boy called the little prince. The prince asks the pilot to draw a sheep. After a few tries, the pilot draws a crate and says the sheep is inside. This simple drawing makes the prince very happy. As the pilot works, the prince shares the story of his life. He lived on a tiny asteroid known as B 612.

This small home had three tiny volcanoes and many plants.

The prince's life on his asteroid involved many important tasks. He had to clean his volcanoes and pull up bad seeds. He also had to remove baobab trees before they grew too large. The prince also cared for a special rose that grew on his planet. He made a glass globe to protect her from the wind. He watered her and kept caterpillars away from her. However, the prince eventually left his planet to explore the universe. He visited six other planets, each with a different adult living there. He met a king, a conceited man, and a businessman.

He also met a lamplighter and a geographer.

On Earth, the prince learns important lessons about what makes things special. He meets a fox who teaches him about the idea of being "tamed." To tame someone means to create a special bond with them. The fox explains that once you tame something, you are responsible for it forever. This helps the prince realize his rose is unique because of the love he gave her. The fox says that important things can only be seen with the heart. The prince eventually meets a snake that can help him return home. The story ends with the prince leaving his body behind to go back to his rose.

Many different kinds of art have been inspired by this story.

People have turned the book into radio plays and live stage shows. It has also been made into films, television programs, ballets, and operas. The author, Saint-Exupéry, worked very hard to make the writing perfect. He often wrote late at night with strong black coffee. He was known to be a perfectionist who edited his drafts heavily. Some of his best ideas even came while he was flying solo missions. His life as an aviator helped shape the desert setting of his most famous tale.
