The word "Shoah" is the Hebrew name for this period of history. The film is over nine hours long. It took eleven years to finish making. Director Claude Lanzmann wanted to tell this story through real people. He did not use old news clips or archival footage. Instead, he focused on the voices of those who lived through it. This method makes the history feel very direct and personal.

Lanzmann used a special way to gather his stories. He traveled to many sites in Poland to find witnesses. He interviewed survivors who lived through the camps. He also spoke to people who witnessed the events. He even interviewed people who worked for the Nazi regime.

Some interviews were done using a hidden camera. This was because some people were reluctant to be filmed. These scenes sometimes look grainy and black-and-white. Lanzmann also set up certain scenes to help tell the story. For example, he hired a steam locomotive to show how trains moved people.

The film explores several important and difficult locations. It looks at the Warsaw ghetto where many people lived. It also covers the Treblinka death camp. At Treblinka, people were moved by trains in a very short time. The film shows how the camp worked like an assembly line. It also covers the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. One man named Filip Müller describes his work at the camp. He remembers how the prisoners behaved even in very hard moments. These details help us understand the scale of what happened.

Many specific people share their memories in the film. Jan Karski was a member of the Polish Underground. He used false documents to enter the Warsaw ghetto in secret. He traveled to England to tell leaders what was happening. Another man, Henryk Gawkowski, was a railway worker. He drove the trains that carried people to Treblinka. Lanzmann even used a photograph of Gawkowski for the film's poster. Other people, like Abraham Bomba, share stories of their lives in the camps. Their names and experiences provide a real look at history.

Shoah has had a huge impact on the world. It was released in Paris in April 1985. The film won many important prizes. It won the New York Film Critics Circle Award. It also won a BAFTA Award for Best Documentary. Some people, like Simone de Beauvoir, called it a masterpiece. However, the film was not well received by the government in Poland. It is now seen as a major way to remember history. The film connects the past to the present through human testimony.
