A graphic novel uses drawings and words to tell a story. The author is Art Spiegelman. He wrote this book to tell his family's history.

The story has two parts. In one part, Art talks to his father, Vladek. They talk in New York City during the late 1970s. Art wants to learn about the past. In the other part, the story moves back in time. It tells how Vladek lived during the Holocaust. This was a very hard time during World War II.

Art uses a special way to draw the people. He draws Jewish people as mice. He draws German people as cats.
