Spiegelman uses animals to represent different groups of people. He draws Jewish people as mice and Germans as cats. He also draws Poles as pigs and Americans as dogs. This unique style helps people understand a very difficult history. It took him thirteen years to finish this huge project. In 1992, Maus won a special Pulitzer Prize for its importance.

He also joined the underground comix movement in the 1970s. This was a time when artists made experimental and personal comics. He moved to San Francisco to be part of this scene. Together, they edited a large magazine called Raw from 1980 to 1991. This magazine was very big and showed many new artists. It helped famous cartoonists like Charles Burns and Chris Ware find success. The couple also worked for the famous magazine The New Yorker. Spiegelman spent ten years as a contributing artist there. He used his drawings to talk about important world events. In 2004, he published work about the September 11 attacks.

He also mentors younger artists to help them grow. In 2022, he received the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters. This award shows how much people value his life's work. He continues to show that comics can be serious art. His life shows how drawing can help us understand the world.
