His work often looks back at American folk culture from the late 1800s and early 1900s. At the same time, he uses his art to poke fun at modern American life. He is famous for a drawing style called crosshatching. This means he uses many tiny pen-and-ink lines to create detail. This style was inspired by old cartoons from the 1920s and 1930s. His art has become so important that it is shown in big museums.

Crumb helped lead a movement called underground comix during the 1960s. He was a founder of Zap Comix, which was the first successful underground comic book.

He worked on all 16 issues of that famous series. He also drew for many other magazines and collections. During this time, he created characters that became very popular icons. Some of these characters include Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural. He also made the famous Keep On Truckin' art. His work during this era often explored very adult and intense themes.

Crumb's journey as an artist began long before he was famous. He was born on August 30, 1943, in Philadelphia. As a young boy, he drew comics with his brothers. In 1958, the brothers even published three issues of a comic called Foo. They sold these little books door-to-door, but they did not sell many. After high school, Crumb worked at American Greetings in Cleveland, Ohio. He spent four years drawing novelty greeting cards there. His bosses asked him to draw in a cute style. This early training left a mark on his art for many years.

As he grew older, Crumb's career took many different paths. In the mid-1970s, he contributed to a collection called the Arcade anthology. He later founded a magazine called Weirdo, which ran from 1981 to 1993. This magazine helped define a new era of alternative comics. In 1991, he was even put into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame. His life was also the subject of a famous film in 1994. This movie was directed by Terry Zwigoff and looked at his art. He has also made large books, like his illustrated version of the Bible.

Art is a big part of the Crumb family history. Robert Crumb worked closely with his wife, the cartoonist Aline Kominsky-Crumb. They often worked on art projects together. Their daughter, Sophie Crumb, has also become a professional cartoonist. This shows how much the family loves the craft of drawing. Crumb's work connects old-fashioned cartooning with new, bold ideas. Even when he draws about his own life, his style remains very special. He continues to be a major name in the world of comics today.
