His music was very different from most songs. It mixed blues, jazz, and rock with strange rhythms. He also used funny and unusual words in his lyrics. Many artists in the punk era were influenced by his experimental style.

Making his music was a very specific way of working. Van Vliet often had ideas that were hard to explain with words. Sometimes he would whistle a tune to his band. Other times he would bang on a piano to show a rhythm. His drummer, John French, had to work hard to write these ideas down. This helped the other musicians learn how to play the songs.

This process helped create his famous and jagged sound.

Van Vliet grew up in California and was a child prodigy in art. He began painting and making sculptures when he was only three years old.

At age four, he even appeared on a Los Angeles television program. He won a sculpting competition at the Los Angeles Zoo when he was nine. He spent time learning from a sculptor named Agostinho Rodrigues. Later, he moved to the Mojave Desert. This desert environment helped shape his creative ideas later in life.

His musical career had many important moments and names. He began performing as Captain Beefheart in 1964. He worked with the famous musician Frank Zappa in his early years. Between 1967 and 1982, he recorded 13 studio albums. One very famous album is called Trout Mask Replica from 1969.

Music was only one part of his life's work. In 1982, he retired from music to focus on painting. He made abstract paintings and drawings that showed his love for animals. He often painted fish, dinosaurs, and mammals like lemurs.
