He used a way of drawing called autography. This is a type of lithography, which is a way to print images. Autography let him draw with a pen on special paper. This made his lines look loose and free. It was much faster than the common engraving process used back then. Each page in his books had one to six panels. These panels were small boxes that held his drawings and words.

Töpffer's ideas helped many other artists in the future. He influenced artists like Wilhelm Busch, who made Max and Moritz. His books even appeared in a New York newspaper called Brother Jonathan. This helped start the comic book style in America. Töpffer also had special thoughts about children and art. He wrote that children are often more creative than trained artists. He believed technical skill can sometimes hide a person's true creativity.
