Émile Cohl was a man who changed how we see stories.

He is often called "The Father of the Animated Cartoon." This is because he helped create the very first way to make drawings move on a screen. Cohl loved to draw throughout his whole life. He started with funny drawings called caricatures. Later, he moved into the world of movies. His work helped turn art into something that could dance and change right before our eyes.

Cohl learned a lot from watching puppet shows in Paris. He saw a type of show called Guignol. In these shows, actors used puppets to tell stories. There was also a style called Fantoche. This used a puppeteer's head behind a black sheet with a small puppet below. Cohl used these ideas in his art. He drew people with very large heads on tiny bodies. This made the characters look silly and funny, just like the puppets he loved.

When he was young, Cohl worked with a famous artist named André Gill.

Gill was the best at drawing caricatures at that time. Cohl worked as an assistant to help Gill. He learned how to draw the backgrounds for the pictures. During this time, he chose the name "Cohl" for himself. He also joined a group of artists called the Incoherents. This group loved art that was strange, silly, and even a bit nonsensical.

In 1907, Cohl discovered the magic of motion pictures. He wanted to learn how to make drawings move. He studied a film called "The Haunted Hotel" very closely. He looked at it frame by frame to learn the secret.

He eventually worked at a studio called Gaumont. There, he used a special camera to film his drawings. He worked very hard to make his art come to life on the screen.

Cohl's most famous work is a film called "Fantasmagorie."

He made it between February and June in 1908. It is considered the first fully animated film ever made. He used 700 different drawings to create it. The film lasts almost two minutes long. It uses a "chalk-line effect" to look like white chalk on a dark board.

This amazing film showed the world that drawings could tell their own stories through movement.
