He grew up in Paris, France. As a boy, he found out he was very good at art. He spent time watching puppet shows. These shows used small dolls to tell stories. He also loved drawing caricatures. These are funny drawings that poke fun at people.

Cohl worked with a famous artist named André Gill. He learned how to draw big heads on small bodies. This style was inspired by puppet shows. Cohl later joined a group called the Incoherents. This group loved art that was silly and strange. They even had an art show for people who did not know how to draw!

Later, Cohl found a new way to make art. He learned about motion pictures. He studied how to make drawings move on a screen.

In 1908, he made a film called Fantasmagorie. He used 700 drawings to make it. This is known as the first fully animated film. Because of this work, people call him the "Father of the Animated Cartoon."
