He was born in Paris in 1889. He was the son of a doctor and a working-class mother. Abel grew up in a coal-mining town called Commentry. He left school at the age of 14. He taught himself about art and books. This self-education helped him throughout his whole life. He eventually became a very important person in the world of cinema.

Abel was a pioneer in the way films are put together. This is called montage, which is the joining of film clips.

He loved to try new and exciting things. He used extreme close-ups and low-angle shots. He also used split-screen images to show more on one screen. In one film, he used mirrors to change how things looked. These new ideas changed how people made movies.

His early life was full of many different jobs. He worked as a clerk in a lawyer's office. Later, he became an actor in the theatre. He even worked in a theatre in Brussels. While there, he wrote his first film stories. He moved back to Paris in 1909 to act in films. At first, he did not think much of the cinema. He only took film jobs because he needed the money.

Abel made several very famous silent films. One was called J'accuse, which he made in 1919.

This film used a special system called Polyvision. It used three cameras to make a very wide picture. The colors at the end even looked like a French flag.
