Creating Kong was a big job for the filmmakers. The character was made by an American filmmaker named Merian C. Cooper. Cooper loved reading about gorillas when he was a young boy. He wanted to make a movie about a giant, scary primate. He even used ideas from books about huge lizards called Komodo dragons. To make him look real, artists like Willis O'Brien and Marcel Delgado built models. They sculpted the ape to have the strength of many men. They wanted him to look like a real gorilla but with human qualities.

Kong connects to many other famous stories and characters. He has appeared in books and even on theme park rides. He has crossed over into the worlds of Tarzan and Planet of the Apes. Even his scientific name, Megaprimatus kong, sounds like something from a real science book. This name means "big supreme being" in Latin. The name "Kong" itself came from Cooper's love of words starting with the letter K. He liked the way words like Komodo and Kodiak sounded. This simple name helped make him a legend that lasts forever.
