Kamen Rider is a massive Japanese media franchise centered on heroic warriors. It includes television programs, films, manga, and anime. Most stories follow a group of motorcycle-riding superheroes who share an insect motif. These heroes fight supervillains, often called kaijin, to protect the world. These villains frequently belong to evil organizations. Often, these same organizations are responsible for the heroes' augmentations. This creates a central conflict where the heroes use the enemy's own technology to fight back.

The transformation process is a core part of the action. Most Riders use a specialized transformation belt known as a Henshin belt. To activate it, the hero uses a specific transformation phrase. This process changes them into an enhanced Rider form. Once transformed, they fight various kaijin on a "monster of the week" basis. Each Rider possesses unique combat forms, weapons, and destructive abilities. While motorcycles are the most common vehicles, some series use alternatives. Kamen Rider Drive uses a sports car called the Tridoron. Kamen Rider Revice utilizes a hoverbike, and Kamen Rider Gavv uses a candy-themed buggy.

To finish a battle, a Rider often uses a signature move. This is frequently the Rider Kick, a powerful flying dive kick. This move is typically used when the enemy is weakened enough to be destroyed. The destruction often results in an explosive finish. This sequence of transformation, combat, and the final kick defines the rhythm of many series. Each hero's arsenal is tailored to their specific theme and abilities.

The franchise began in 1971 with the first Kamen Rider television series. Manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori created the characters. He worked with a producer to design a hero that resembled a grasshopper. The original hero was Takeshi Hongo, a college student and a cyborg. A cyborg is a being with both organic and machine parts. During the filming of episode 10, actor Hiroshi Fujioka broke both legs in a motorcycle stunt. Despite this, the creators decided not to kill off his character. They believed they could not destroy the dreams of children. This led to the introduction of Hayato Ichimonji, known as Kamen Rider 2, in episode 14.

Kamen Rider history is divided into distinct eras. The Shōwa era began in 1971 and included series like Kamen Rider V3 and Kamen Rider Stronger. After a hiatus, the franchise returned in 1979 with The New Kamen Rider. The 1980s featured Kamen Rider Black, which was the first to hint at a different connection to earlier shows. The Heisei era began around the year 2000 with Kamen Rider Kuuga. This era introduced many different styles. For example, Kamen Rider Den-O featured a time-traveling bullet train called the DenLiner. Kamen Rider Wizard introduced magic into the franchise. Kamen Rider Gaim used a Sengoku period and fruit theme.

The stories often explore complex and serious themes. A recurring idea is the internal turmoil of using violence for good. This is symbolized by "tear lines" on the Riders' helmets. These lines represent the heavy sacrifices made for a noble cause. The stories also examine the nature of humanity. Some kaijins show human kindness, while some humans act with extreme cruelty. This makes many Riders "morally grey." This means they have complicated reasons for fighting. They may even clash with other Riders over their different ideals.

Kamen Rider connects to the wider world of Japanese pop culture. It often features crossover events, such as the Super Hero Taisen films. These films bring together heroes from the Kamen Rider and Super Sentai franchises. The franchise is also a major part of the toy industry. Bandai owns the toy rights in Japan and other Asian regions. Bandai Namco Toys and Collectibles America distributes merchandise in North America. This ensures that the characters remain a constant presence in the lives of fans through various media and products.
