His father, Kan'ami, led a theater group. Zeami learned to act in this group at a young age. He was very skilled. A powerful leader named Ashikaga Yoshimitsu saw him perform. The leader was impressed by the young actor. He helped Zeami study poetry and philosophy. This was rare for actors back then.

Zeami became a professional artist in 1374. He led his family's theater troupe after his father died. He wrote many plays for Noh theater. Noh is a special kind of Japanese drama. He wrote between 30 and 50 plays. He also wrote 21 books about acting. These books explained how to move and sing. One famous book is called Fushikaden.

Later in life, Zeami faced hard times. A new leader sent him away to Sado Island. This was called exile. Even while living far away, Zeami kept writing. He died in 1443. Today, people still value his work. His plays and books help us understand old Japanese art.
