People call this style "guohua," which means "national painting." It is different from Western art styles that became popular later. Artists use brushes made from animal hair to create their work. They use black ink made from pine soot and animal glue. They also use colorful pigments instead of oils.

Most paintings are made on paper or silk. Some are mounted on long scrolls to be hung on walls. Other works appear on folding screens, walls, or lacquerware.

There are two main ways that artists work. The first way is called Gongbi, which means "meticulous."

This style uses very precise and detailed brushstrokes. Artists often use many colors for these detailed pictures. The second way is called ink and wash, or "xieyi."

This is a "freehand style" that uses water and ink. Many scholars practiced this as one of their "four arts." Landscape painting is often seen as the highest form of this art. It is called "shanshui," which means "mountain water."

This art has a very long and interesting history.

The earliest paintings were not pictures of things. Instead, they were ornamental patterns like spirals or zigzags. During the Eastern Zhou period, artists began to paint the world around them. In the Han dynasty, artists mostly painted human figures.

In the north, artists like Fan Kuan painted huge, towering mountains. They used strong black lines and sharp dots for rough stone. In the south, artists like Dong Yuan painted rolling hills. They used softer brushwork to show peaceful rivers and countryside.

During the Song dynasty, landscape painting reached a new level. Artists used blurred outlines to show mountains disappearing into mist. This helped create a sense of vast and infinite space. These styles became the classical ways to paint nature.

Learning to paint takes a lot of practice and discipline.

Students often learn by copying a master. They must copy the "right way" to draw items many times. This helps their movements become instinctive and natural. A writer named Xie He created six principles for judging art.

One principle is "Spirit Resonance," or the flow of energy. Another is the "Bone Method," which is how the brush is used. These rules help artists connect their work to the rhythm of life.
