Admiral Yi was a very smart leader. He chose to fight in the Myeongnyang Strait. This place has very strong currents. The water moves very fast in the strait. Yi knew the water would help him. The narrow water stopped the large fleet from surrounding him. When the tide changed, it pushed the Japanese ships back. The ships even crashed into each other. Admiral Yi's ships used cannons to fight. During the battle, 31 Japanese ships were sunk or damaged. The Japanese navy suffered a big defeat. Admiral Yi then moved his ships to a safe place. After the win, more sailors joined his fleet. He had helped save his country's navy.
