The fight was unique because it used rowing ships. These ships are called galleys. They were descendants of the ancient triremes used long ago.

Some ships were even larger. These were called galleasses. They had masts and sails. They also had many big guns. The battle was like an infantry battle on floating platforms. Soldiers fought on the decks of the ships. This was the last major battle fought almost entirely with these rowing vessels. Soon after, the Age of Sail began with larger ships.

Many different lands joined the Holy League to fight.

The Republic of Venice provided 109 galleys. The Spanish Empire sent 49 galleys. Other groups included the Papal States and the Republic of Genoa. The Duchies of Savoy, Urbino, and Tuscany also helped. The Knights of Malta and the Order of Saint Stephen joined too.

This large team had 40,000 sailors and oarsmen. They also carried about 30,000 fighting troops. These soldiers came from many places like Germany and Italy.

Their fleet had about 37,000 oarsmen. Most of these oarsmen were slaves. The Holy League had a big advantage with weapons. They had 1,815 guns on their ships. The Ottomans had only 750 guns. The Christians used muskets, while the Ottomans used composite bows.

The Holy League won a great victory at Lepanto. This win was very important for the history of Europe. It made people feel much more brave. Many thought the Ottoman power was fading. However, the victory did not last forever. The Ottoman Empire rebuilt its entire fleet in under six months. This battle is often compared to the ancient Battle of Salamis. Both battles were key to defending Europe. The victory also had a big symbolic meaning for religious leaders of that time.
