history Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Second Bulgarian Empire was a powerful state in the Middle Ages. It lasted from the year 1185 until 1422. This empire grew after a period when the Byzantine Empire ruled the land. Many people wanted to restore their own Bulgarian statehood. This new empire became a very important part of history in the Balkans.

It was a time of great change and new beginnings for the people.

The empire began with a famous uprising led by two brothers. Their names were Theodore and Asen. They lived in the town of Tarnovo. The brothers had a disagreement with the Byzantine emperor, Isaac II Angelos. This argument helped spark a large rebellion against Byzantine rule.

To help their cause, they built a church for Saint Demetrius. They used a special icon to inspire the people to fight for freedom. They also gained help from the Cumans, a Turkic tribe from the north.

Bulgaria grew very strong under its later leaders. Tsar Kaloyan was one of these powerful rulers. In 1205, he won a major victory at the Battle of Adrianople. He defeated the newly formed Latin Empire during this fight. Later, his nephew Ivan Asen II also led the empire to great success.

Under Ivan Asen II, the land spread from the Adriatic Sea to the Black Sea. The economy flourished and the empire became a regional power.

Life in the empire was full of beautiful art and learning. The capital city, Tarnovo, was a huge center for culture. People called it a "New Constantinople" because it was so important.

Even during hard times, Bulgarian literature and art continued to grow.

Eventually, the empire faced many difficult challenges. In the late 1200s, groups like the Mongols and the Serbs began to invade. The empire also faced unrest from within its own borders. By the 14th century, the central government began to lose its power. The land was eventually divided into three separate parts.
