Second Bulgarian Empire

history Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The Second Bulgarian Empire was a major medieval state in the Balkans. It existed from 1185 until 1422. This empire rose as a successor to the First Bulgarian Empire. It was established after a successful uprising against the Byzantine Empire. The state occupied the lands between the Danube River and the Balkan Mountains. For much of its history, it served as a dominant power in the region.

The empire began with a rebellion led by two brothers from Tarnovo. Their names were Theodore and Asen. They had a conflict with the Byzantine Emperor Isaac II Angelos. The Emperor refused their request for land and struck Asen in the face. In response, the brothers built a church for Saint Demetrius. They used a sacred icon to inspire the people to fight. This religious connection helped spark a massive revolt against Byzantine rule.

Success in the rebellion required strong military support. The brothers gained help from the Cumans, a Turkic tribe from north of the Danube. The Cumans became a vital part of the Bulgarian army. Theodore was crowned Emperor as Peter IV. Later, Asen became the leader known as Ivan Asen I. The Bulgarians won several battles against the Byzantines. One major victory occurred at the Tryavna Pass in 1190. This battle resulted in the capture of the Imperial treasury.

The empire reached its peak under two specific leaders. Tsar Kaloyan and his nephew Ivan Asen II were both powerful rulers. In 1205, Kaloyan won the Battle of Adrianople. He defeated the newly established Latin Empire during this conflict. Later, Ivan Asen II made Bulgaria a major regional power. Under his rule, the empire expanded from the Adriatic Sea to the Black Sea. The economy flourished during this period of growth.

Bulgarian culture reached new heights during the 14th century. The capital city was Tarnovo. People called it the "New Constantinople" because it was a massive cultural hub. It served as a center for the Eastern Orthodox world. Bulgarian artists and architects developed a unique, distinctive style. They produced beautiful literature and intricate art. One famous example is the Tetraevangelia of Ivan Alexander.

However, the empire eventually faced a long decline. In the late 13th century, constant invasions arrived from many directions. Mongols, Byzantines, Hungarians, and Serbs all attacked the territory. Internal unrest and local revolts also weakened the state. By the 14th century, central authority began to fade. This period saw the peak of Balkan feudalism. The empire was eventually divided into three separate parts.

The final stage of the empire involved the Ottoman conquest. The Ottomans gradually took control of the Bulgarian lands. This process included major conflicts like the Battle of Nicopolis in 1398. Even after the fall, Bulgarian culture did not disappear. Many scholars and clerics emigrated to other regions. They moved to Serbia, Wallachia, Moldavia, and Russian principalities. There, they shared Bulgarian books and religious ideas.
