His life began with many changes for his family. His father, Ivan Asen I, helped start the Second Bulgarian Empire. However, a man named Ivanko killed the elder Ivan Asen in 1196. After that, a man named Kaloyan became the leader. When Kaloyan was killed in 1207, a man named Boril took the throne. This was not easy for the young Ivan Asen. He had to leave his home to stay safe.

Ivan Asen spent a long time living in the lands of the Russians. While he was away, he gathered an army to return home. He wanted to take back his family's land. He led his soldiers to the city of Tarnovo. After a long siege, the people in the city surrendered to him. Ivan Asen then captured Boril and became the ruler of Bulgaria.

He worked hard to make his rule strong. He made deals with neighboring lands like Hungary and the Latin Empire. He even tried to help lead the young Latin Emperor, Baldwin II. These choices helped keep his new kingdom peaceful for a while.

In 1230, a big change happened for Bulgaria. A leader named Theodore Komnenos Doukas attacked the country. Ivan Asen met him at the Battle of Klokotnitsa. Ivan Asen was a smart leader during this fight. He even held up a peace treaty to show his enemy had broken his word. The Bulgarian army won a huge victory that day.

Because of this win, Bulgaria became the strongest land in Southeastern Europe. Ivan Asen took control of many new places. These included lands in Macedonia, Thessaly, and Thrace. His empire grew much larger than it had been before.

Winning these battles brought a lot of wealth to the country. Ivan Asen controlled the Via Egnatia, which was a major trade path. This path helped goods move easily between different places. Because there was so much money, he started a big building program. He made the imperial palace in Tarnovo much larger. He also built the Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs.
