Volga Bulgaria was a powerful state that existed between the 9th and 13th centuries. It was located near where the Volga and Kama rivers meet. This area is in what we now call European Russia. The state was home to many different groups of people. These included Bulgars, Finno-Ugrians, Varangians, and East Slavs. Because of its location, the state was a very important center for trade. It acted as a bridge between many different parts of the world.

Life in Volga Bulgaria was shaped by its busy trade routes. The state held a monopoly, which means they controlled much of the local business. They traded goods like furs and silk with people from far away. Traders came from the Vikings in the north to Baghdad in the south. They even connected with people from Western Europe and China. Some of their most important cities were Bolghar and Bilär. Bolghar was a very wealthy city that rivaled the greatest centers of the Islamic world.

The history of the Bulgars is a bit of a mystery to scholars. Many believe they originally lived in the lands between Kazakhstan and the North Caucasus. A leader named Kotrag is remembered as the founder of Volga Bulgaria. He moved his people toward the Volga River in the eighth century. By the end of the 9th century, the Bulgars were the main group in the region. They eventually became independent from the Khazar Khaganate. This happened after the Khazars were defeated by a leader named Sviatoslav in the late 10th century.

A major turning point happened in the year 922. In that year, Volga Bulgaria officially adopted Islam as its state religion. This happened through an embassy sent to the Caliph. The Bulgars even tried to share this religion with Vladimir I of Kiev. However, Vladimir chose not to adopt it because he did not want to give up wine. The state also became a major part of a large trade network. This network moved goods from the Baltic Sea all the way to the Abbasid Caliphate.

Eventually, the state faced many hard times and many attacks. In the 11th century, raids from the Rus' principalities caused trouble. Later, in the 13th century, the Mongols arrived. In 1236, the Mongols conquered the country and it became part of the Golden Horde. Many people were lost during these wars. After this, the area eventually saw the rise of the Kazan Khanate. Some of the old Bulgar people helped build the new city of Kazan. This shows how the history of one group can lead to the start of another.
