A leader named Kotrag helped them settle there. Many different groups of people lived in their land. These included Bulgars, Slavs, and others.

The Bulgars were great at trade. They sat in a very good spot for business. They traded furs and silk with people from far away. They traded with Vikings from the north. They also traded with people from China and Baghdad. One of their main cities was Bolghar. It was a very rich and busy place.

In the year 922, the Bulgars chose Islam as their religion. This made their state even stronger. However, hard times came later. People from the west began to attack their cities. Then, the Mongols arrived in the 1200s. This brought much war and sadness to the land. Many people were lost during this time. After the Mongols, the area became part of the Golden Horde.
