Asparuh came from a group called the Dulo clan. His father was a leader named Kubrat. Kubrat ruled a large area called Great Bulgaria in modern Ukraine. After Kubrat died around the year 665, his large state fell apart. This happened because of attacks from a group called the Khazars. Asparuh and his brothers had to find a new, safe home. He led a large group of 30,000 to 50,000 Bulgars on this journey.

Asparuh and his people traveled until they reached the Danube delta. This is where the Danube River meets the sea. They settled on a place called Peuce Island. In the year 680, a Byzantine Emperor named Constantine IV attacked them. The Emperor had to leave his army to get medical help in a place called Anchialo. This caused the Byzantine soldiers to lose hope. The Bulgars and their Slavic allies won a big fight called the Battle of Ongala.

After the battle, Asparuh moved into the Balkan range. He won control over a region called Moesia. He also made a bond with local Slavic groups. The Byzantine Empire decided to sign a treaty with him. They even agreed to pay the Bulgars money every year. This treaty showed that the Byzantine Empire recognized his new state. Asparuh is said to have built important centers like Pliska and Drăstăr. He also helped build large walls to protect the land.
