Asparuh was a powerful Bulgar khan during the late 7th century. He is most famous for establishing the First Bulgarian Empire in 681. This event marked the beginning of a new state in Europe. His leadership helped a group of people find a permanent home.

Asparuh belonged to the Dulo clan, which was a prominent ruling family. His father was a leader named Kubrat. Kubrat had created a large state known as Great Bulgaria. This state was located in the steppes of what is now modern Ukraine. Asparuh likely learned about politics while watching his father rule. Some sources suggest his father made him the leader of the Onogur tribe.

After Kubrat died around 665, the Great Bulgarian state fell apart. This happened because of attacks from the Khazars. Asparuh's older brother, Bat Bayan, became the leader. However, the state could not stay together under the Khazar pressure. Asparuh and his brothers eventually went their separate ways. Asparuh led a massive group of 30,000 to 50,000 Bulgars to find safety. They traveled until they reached the Danube delta. They settled on Peuce Island, which has since disappeared.

Conflict arose when the Byzantine Empire tried to stop them. The Byzantine Emperor, Constantine IV, marched against the Bulgars and their Slavic allies in 680. The Bulgars were joined by local Slavic groups like the Severi. During the conflict, Constantine IV had to leave his army. He went to Anchialo to seek medical treatment for his ailments. This caused the Byzantine troops to lose morale. They began to believe their emperor had abandoned them.

The Bulgars took advantage of this confusion. They broke through the Byzantine blockade at the Battle of Ongala in 680. This victory allowed Asparuh to move from the Danube delta into the Balkan range. He conquered the region of Moesia. He also formed alliances with the local Slavic tribes. This cooperation helped stabilize the new territory. The Bulgars and Slavs worked together within the growing state.

Following these victories, the Byzantine Empire chose to make peace. Asparuh began raiding into Byzantine Thrace. To stop these raids, Constantine IV signed a treaty with the Bulgars. Under this agreement, the Byzantine Empire paid an annual tribute to the Bulgars. This payment was a way for the Byzantines to recognize the new Bulgarian state. Tradition says Asparuh built important centers like Pliska and Drăstăr. He is also credited with building Bulgarian limes, which are defensive walls. These walls stretched from the Danube to the Black Sea.

Asparuh's legacy remains visible in many places today. His name is used for a peak in Antarctica called Asparuh Peak. There is also a town in Ukraine named Isperikh. Some historical traditions say he died while fighting the Khazars on the Danube. One theory suggests his grave is near Voznesenka in Ukraine.
