Its name means "Palace of Prospering Virtue." This palace sits to the east of the main palace, Gyeongbokgung. Because of this position, it is often called part of the "East Palace."

It sits alongside another palace named Changgyeonggung. Together, these two places make up the eastern part of the city's royal area. Today, it is a very special place for the whole world. In 1997, it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Building this palace was a huge job that took many people.

Construction began on the 6th day of the 10th month in 1404. Many different people worked to make it, including artisans, soldiers, monks, and commoners. They worked under the supervision of a man named Yi Chik. The first phase of building was finished in 1405. At first, the palace only had a few complete buildings. These included the royal bathhouse and the royal bedchambers. By the year 1648, the palace had grown to have about 735 rooms.

Many Korean kings chose to live here throughout history.

King Taejong ordered the palace to be built in 1405. He often stayed here instead of at the main Gyeongbokgung palace. Later, King Sejo expanded the palace to the north and east. He used 19,000 people from the Hanyang region to help with his projects. During the Imjin War in 1592, the palace was completely destroyed by fire. However, it was repaired and became the main palace for several centuries. Even after the Korean royal family lived there until the late 20th century, the palace remained important.

The palace has many beautiful parts that visitors can see today.

The palace survived wars, fires, and many changes in government. It even saw the time when Korea became an empire. The palace was changed by Japan during their colonization of Korea in 1910. Despite these hard times, the palace still stands as a historic site. It connects the past of the Joseon dynasty to the modern world. Now, it serves as a major place for tourists to learn about Korean culture.
