It sits on the southern tip of Castle Hill. This hill overlooks the River Danube. The castle is part of a special area called a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Today, the palace is not a home for kings. It is a place for people to visit and learn. It houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest Historical Museum. It also holds the National Széchényi Library.

Building the castle has been a long and changing job. The first royal home was built by King Béla IV between 1247 and 1265.

Later, King Sigismund made the palace much larger in the 1400s. He wanted a grand home to show his power. His palace was likely the largest Gothic palace of that time. Many years later, King Matthias Corvinus added Renaissance style to the buildings. He even added an Italian loggia and beautiful golden ceilings.

History has not always been easy for the castle. In 1526, the Ottoman Turks arrived in the region. They used the palace as a place for storage and stables. They even called it the "Palace of the Golden Apples."

In 1686, a very large army fought to take the city back. A big explosion happened during this siege. A cannon hit a tower that held gunpowder. This caused a huge blast that destroyed many buildings. The old medieval palace was eventually demolished to make room for new plans.

Newer versions of the palace were built over the years. In 1715, a small Baroque palace was started. Later, Queen Maria Theresa helped make the palace a symbol of peace.

Workers built a large, U-shaped Baroque palace with a grand courtyard. This palace was much more fancy than the older ones. However, the castle faced more trouble in the 1900s. It was severely damaged during the Siege of Budapest in World War II. After the war, it was rebuilt in a simpler Baroque style.
