Vaduz

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Vaduz is the capital city of Liechtenstein.

It sits right along the banks of the Rhine river. While it is the most famous place in the country, it is not the largest. A nearby town called Schaan actually has more people living there.

The village is home to about 5,696 residents. Many people who live in Vaduz come from other countries. About 42% of the people living there are foreigners.

The weather in Vaduz follows an oceanic climate. This means the summers feel warm and the winters feel chilly.

It rains in every single month of the year. In July, the warmest month, the high temperatures reach 25°C. The coldest month is January, when highs are only 3°C. The low temperatures in January can drop to -5°C. This cycle of weather shapes how people live in the Rhine Valley.

History tells us that Vaduz has been around for a very long time. It was mentioned in old manuscripts from the 12th century. In the year 1322, records show that the castle existed. Later, in 1499, the Swiss attacked the castle during the Swabian War. The entire village was destroyed during that conflict. The Liechtenstein family later bought the area to gain more power. They bought the lordship of Schellenberg in 1699 and Vaduz in 1712.

There are many special buildings to see in the village. Vaduz Castle sits on a steep hill overlooking everything.

The reigning prince and his family live inside the castle. You can see the castle from almost anywhere in town. Other important buildings include the Cathedral of St. Florin and the Government House. The National Art Gallery is a unique building made of black basalt stone. It was finished in November 2000 and looks like a black box. There are also museums for stamps and for skiing.

Getting to Vaduz is an interesting task for travelers. The city does not have its own airport. Most people fly to Zurich Airport to reach the area. You can also take a bus from places like St. Gallen or Feldkirch. A bridge called the Werdenberger-Binnenkanal connects Vaduz to Switzerland.

For trains, the closest station is in the neighboring town of Schaan. This station sits on the only railway line in the whole country. Even though there is no train in Vaduz, the area is well connected by roads and buses.
