It serves as the seat for the national parliament. The village is situated along the Rhine river. It is located within the Oberland electoral district. While Vaduz is internationally famous, it is not the largest settlement. The neighboring town of Schaan has a larger population. As of 2019, the population of Vaduz was 5,696 residents.

Precipitation occurs in all twelve months of the year. The summer months see a noticeable increase in rainfall. July is the warmest month in the village. History shows that Vaduz has deep roots in the Rhine Valley. The name has a Romance origin. It likely comes from the Old Rhaeto-Romance root *auadutg*. This evolved from the Latin word *vadum*. Historic manuscripts from the 12th century mention the settlement as *Faduzes*. Records from 1322 confirm the existence of the castle. However, the village faced great destruction in 1499. During the Swabian War, the Swiss sacked the castle. This conflict destroyed the entire village.

The modern state of Liechtenstein was created through political strategy. In the 17th century, the Liechtenstein family wanted more power. They sought a seat in the Imperial diet, known as the Reichstag. To qualify, they needed land held directly from the Holy Roman Emperor. This status is called *reichsunmittelbar*. The family purchased the Lordship of Schellenberg in 1699. They then purchased the countship of Vaduz in 1712. These lands were held without intermediate feudal patronage. On 23 January 1719, Emperor Charles VI united these lands. He raised them to a principality named Liechtenstein. This honored his servant, Anton Florian of Liechtenstein.

Architecture defines the visual character of the village. Vaduz Castle is the most prominent landmark. It is perched atop a steep hill. The reigning prince and the princely family live there. The castle is visible from almost any location in the village. Other important structures include the Cathedral of St. Florin.

The Government House and the Village Hall also show distinctive styles. The National Art Gallery, or Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, is a modern landmark. It was completed in November 2000. The building was designed by Swiss architects Morger, Degelo, and Kerez. It is constructed from tinted concrete and black basalt stone.

Local government in Vaduz has evolved through many legal changes. Since the municipal law of 1864, a mayor and council have administered the town. Originally, the council included a mayor, a treasurer, and seven councillors. A revision in 1974 increased the council to twelve seats. It also extended the term of office to four years. The election system changed to open list proportional representation. Voting rights also changed significantly over time. Vaduz replaced universal male suffrage with universal suffrage in 1976. This was earlier than the national change in 1984. The current mayor is Florian Meier. He was elected during a 2024 by-election.

Transport connections to Vaduz are unique because it lacks an airport. Travelers must use nearby facilities like Zurich Airport or St. Gallen–Altenrhein Airport. The village is accessible by car via the A13 motorway in Switzerland. It also connects to the A14 motorway in Austria. A bridge called the Werdenberger-Binnenkanal connects Vaduz to Switzerland.

This station is in the neighboring town of Schaan. It sits on the Feldkirch–Buchs railway line. This is the only railway line in Liechtenstein. It was opened on 24 October 1872. The line is served by the Vorarlberg S-Bahn. This service is operated by Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB).
