Every room has something wonderful to notice.

This museum has a long and interesting history. Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria-Hungary opened it around 1891. He wanted a new home for the Habsburg family's huge art collection. He also wanted the public to be able to see it. The building was built between 1871 and 1891. Two men named Gottfried Semper and Baron Karl von Hasenauer planned it. It was built at the same time as the Natural History Museum.

Many things in the museum connect to the wider world. For example, Diego Velázquez painted portraits of the Spanish royal family. These paintings were sent to Vienna to join the collection. The museum has also faced hard times and big stories. A famous sculpture called the Cellini Salt Cellar was stolen in 2003. It was found years later in a box near Zwettl.
