People also call it the Golden Hall. This room is long, wide, and very high. It has 1,744 seats for people to sit in. There is also room for about 300 people to stand. The sound in this hall is very lively. This happens because the room is shaped like a tall shoebox. The walls and sculptures help the sound bounce around. This makes the music reach everyone in the room.

A man named Theophil Hansen designed the building.

He was a Danish architect. He used the Neoclassical style. This style makes the building look like an ancient Greek temple. The building opened on 6 January 1870. Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria gave the land in 1863. Important people like Nikolaus Dumba helped pay for it. Dumba was a man of Aromanian Greek-Albanian descent. Another donor was Simon Sinas, who was also of Aromanian descent.

The hall has many different rooms for music.

Some are named after materials like gold, glass, or metal. There is also a room named the Brahms-Saal. The Great Hall has a large pipe organ inside.

A man named Friedrich Ladegast built the first one. Anton Bruckner played a recital on it in 1872. A new organ was put in by Rieger Orgelbau in 1907. This instrument was rebuilt again in 2011.

The Musikverein is a very important part of music history. It is the place where the annual Vienna New Year's Concert happens. The acoustics are famous all over the world. The Golden Hall is compared to other great halls. These include the Konzerthaus in Berlin and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. It is also like Symphony Hall in Boston. These halls all use shapes that help music sound beautiful. People still gather here to enjoy great songs today.
