Based in Vienna, Austria, they perform in a grand building called the Musikverein. This venue has a famous room called the Goldener Saal. The hall has special acoustics, which are the way sound moves through a space. These sounds help shape the unique style and sound of the orchestra. People love this group because they hold a very high standard of musical skill.

Becoming a member of this orchestra is a very long and hard job. Musicians must first be part of the orchestra at the Vienna State Opera. They must perform there for at least three years to show they are ready. After this time, they can ask the board for a position in the Philharmonic. There are strict rules for the musicians in this group. The orchestra does not hire anyone who is over 35 years old. Musicians also have a mandatory retirement age of 65.

The history of the group began long ago in the 1830s. Before then, orchestras in Vienna were often made of different musicians for just one show. In 1833, Franz Lachner formed a group that was a forerunner to the Philharmonic. The actual Vienna Philharmonic was started in 1842 by a group of friends. They met at an inn called 'Zum Amor' to plan their ideas. This group included a poet, an editor, and a composer named Otto Nicolai. Nicolai conducted their very first concert on March 28, 1842.

Over many years, famous leaders called conductors helped the orchestra grow. Otto Dessoff was a leader who helped the group find a new home in 1870. Later, Hans Richter led the group for many years. He helped them play new music by the composer Johannes Brahms. Another leader, Gustav Mahler, took the orchestra on its first trip abroad. They traveled to the Paris World Exposition in the year 1900. Felix Weingartner also led many concerts and took the group to South America in 1922.

They also performed music by Tchaikovsky and Johann Strauss, Jr. Some leaders, like Clemens Krauss, helped start the famous New Year's Day concerts. The orchestra has even worked through very difficult times in history. Through it all, they have kept their tradition of excellence alive.
