Carlos Kleiber was a famous music leader known as a conductor. He is often called one of the greatest of all time. Conductors use their hands to lead large groups of musicians. Kleiber was known for being a perfectionist in his work. He spent very long hours rehearsing with his orchestras. He wanted every note to be exactly right. His musical life followed a very specific path. He was born in Berlin in 1930 as Karl Ludwig Bonifacius Kleiber. His father, Erich Kleiber, was also a very famous conductor. In 1935, the family moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina. It was there that he became known as Carlos. As a young boy, he studied piano, singing, and timpani. He even tried studying chemistry at ETH Zurich. Eventually, he decided to follow his passion for music instead.

In 1988, he performed at the Metropolitan Opera with Luciano Pavarotti. He even turned down a chance to lead the Berlin Philharmonic. Kleiber made several highly regarded recordings in the studio.
