As a conductor, he used his skills to lead large groups of musicians through complex pieces of music. He was a very powerful figure in European classical music for many years. One reason he was so well-known was because he made a huge number of recordings. Experts estimate that he sold as many as 200 million records during his lifetime. He spent 34 years as the principal conductor for the Berlin Philharmonic.

This long job helped make him a dominant force in the world of music.

His journey into music began when he was a young boy. He first learned how to play the piano. From 1916 to 1926, he studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. There, he learned about harmony and how to write music. His teacher, Bernhard Paumgartner, noticed that Herbert had a special talent for conducting. This encouraged him to focus on leading orchestras rather than just playing the piano. After graduating, he moved to the Vienna Academy to study more. He studied conducting with teachers named Alexander Wunderer and Franz Schalk.

Karajan came from a family with a long and interesting history.

His ancestors had roots in Greece and Slovenia. His great-great-grandfather, Georg Karajan, moved to Vienna in 1767. Georg and his brother worked in the cloth industry in Saxony. Because of their hard work, they were given noble titles in 1792. This added the word "von" to the family name. Herbert was born in Salzburg to Ernst and Marta von Karajan. His father was a surgeon, which is a type of doctor.

His career included many important roles and some difficult moments. In 1935, he became the youngest Generalmusikdirektor in Germany at the city of Aachen.

During the Nazi era, his life became more complicated. He was a member of the Nazi Party, which caused much debate. Some people believed he joined only to help his career grow. After World War II ended, he had to face a legal meeting in Vienna. In 1946, a tribunal cleared him of any illegal activity. He was then allowed to start conducting for the public again.

Even as he grew older, Karajan remained a major part of the music world. He helped build the Philharmonia Orchestra in London into a great group. He also loved the beautiful Alps mountains very much. He once said he wished to be reborn as an eagle to fly over them.
